There is something quietly intoxicating about birds. They hold the key to the ultimate human fantasy - the effortless, gravity-defying urge to just flap your arms and take off.
I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of flying. Not in a plane, but really flying, the kind where you just jump, catch a breeze and suddenly you’re weightless.
It probably started when I was a kid watching The Boy Who Could Fly. I must’ve watched that movie a hundred times, totalyl captivated by the idea if that if you just believed it enough you could lift off the ground. Even now, I still get those vivid dreams where I’m floating over everything and waking up from them always leaves me wtih this trange lingering ache to be up in the sky.
That’s why I love birds so much. Every time I watch them take off part of me is deeply jealous.
I also love watching their behaviour. Far from being simple creatures, they are razor sharp problem solvers, tool users and masters of their environments. They are a perfect blend of ancient history, incredible intelligence and the pure breathtaking freedom we can only ever dream of.
Painting directly onto feathers is how I capture my lifelong obsession with flight Turning the very instrument of a birds freedom into my canvas.
